Interior Designer Feature: Anna Claire Leary, Anna Claire Interiors

Anna Claire, based in Birmingham and Huntsville, started her interior design business six months ago. We were thrilled to have the chance to interview her and learn more about her work.

Q: Tell us about yourself.

A: I’m a graduate from the University of Alabama and started my design career working in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Some of my designs are still inspired by the coastal casual lifestyle (natural fiber rugs, neutrals, greens, blues, etc.).

Q: What drew you to interior design?

A: I was immersed in the design industry at young age. My grandfather, Glenn Cope, is a custom home builder in Huntsville, Alabama, and my grandmother, Ann Cope, has a natural gift for interior styling. They inspire me to appreciate design details and challenge me to think creatively. At a young age, I loved to style and organize my friends’ bedrooms, including my own. Instead of playing with Barbies, I preferred to design their doll houses.

Q: What is your favorite room to design?

A: Living rooms are my favorite to design because there are so many opportunities to incorporate different textures, fabrics, trims, and other details. It’s special to design a space in which most people gather with family and friends and where many memories are made.

Q: Do you have a signature style in all of your work?

A: I would describe my personal style as classic meets comfort with a touch of whimsy. Frequently, I use patterns that evoke a sense of timelessness, so my clients enjoy them for years to come. In my opinion, spaces that are understated and effortless are the most elegant. Leonardo da Vinci was right when he said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” I try to avoid a signature look when designing homes for others because I believe the home should be a reflection of the homeowner.

Q: How do you draw inspiration for each project?

A: Sometimes I’ll find a fabric, rug, or piece of art that really inspires me and design a whole room around it. Inspiration can be found in the most unusual places…such as restaurant bathrooms, hotel lobbies, etc. I really like to get to know my clients’ personalities and study the way they live so I can translate that into my designs.

Q: What’s one thing you can do in a room to perk it up?

A: I’m a strong believer in how fabrics can really take a room to another level. I like to incorporate custom pillows and/or draperies into my designs because I believe it personalizes and softens a space.

Q: Is there one thing or trend clients are asking you for the most?

A: Wallpaper! Love it or hate it, wallpaper is back. Most recently, I’ve had several clients request that we incorporate wallpaper in at least one space in the house.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like everyone to know about you or your business?

A: I’m willing to travel for out of town clients if needed! I am accustomed to working remotely and will make site visits to other cities and states.
